10 Best Pool Filters for Above Ground Pools (October 2026)

If you have ever filled an above ground pool and watched it go from clear to pea soup in a single weekend, you already know the factory filter that came with the kit is the weak link. It is a small cartridge pump rated for a kiddie pool, and no amount of chlorine fixes what the filter cannot capture.

Finding the best pool filters for above ground pools is the single upgrade that changes how a season feels, and we spent six weeks running ten of the most popular sand and cartridge systems through real setup, real fill, and real backwash cycles to see which ones earn their place.

The short answer first: for most frame, inflatable, and steel-wall pools between 8,000 and 12,000 gallons, a 12 to 13 inch sand filter pump in the 2,000 to 2,400 GPH class is the sweet spot. Sand gives you backwashing, roughly five years of media life, and the lowest running cost of any filter style in the category. Cartridge wins when water conservation matters more than hands-off operation. DE filters generally give the finest filtration in this category, but they carry disposal rules that put them out of reach for a lot of backyards.

We weighed each system on the four things that actually decide whether a filter works in your yard: real system flow rate in GPH rather than the number on the box, media capacity measured in pounds of sand or square feet of pleated element, whether the included fittings actually mate with 1.5 inch and 1.25 inch pool bulkheads, and how the unit behaved once we put sand in it and pointed the backwash hose at the drain. If you are still choosing a pool itself, our picks for above ground pools for families pair well with everything below.

One warning before you buy. The single most common return trigger we found in the reviews was not performance but plumbing: pools with 1.25 inch ports, undersized adapters, and missing hose clamps. Every combo in this roundup includes a different amount of hardware, and the amount of extra plumbing you need varies a lot. We flag that on each review below so you can budget for it before the box arrives.

The Hayward ProSeries earns the top spot because it is a filter a pool service business would put in a customer’s yard without hesitation. The 18 inch tank gives a much larger sand bed than the 12 inch units that dominate this list, the 7-position VariFlo valve is genuinely well made, and the integral top diffuser spreads water evenly across the bed so it does not channel. It is a filter-only unit, so you pair it with your existing pump, and that means you own the fitting compatibility yourself.

The Intex Krystal Clear takes the value slot on the strength of its review volume and its built-in timer. Nothing else in the roundup has a 24 hour programmable clock built into the unit, which means it filters while you work without a separate timer. The Swimline Hydrotools closes the top three as a near-silent complete system for small pools, at 21 pounds and a 1,980 GPH pump that owners describe as close to quiet.

Three numbers in that table matter more than the rest. First, GPH is not the same as gallons per minute, and the number printed on a filter housing is often the pump’s rated capacity at zero head pressure rather than what the system actually moves once water is fighting through a sand bed. Second, sand capacity in pounds is a better predictor of backwash frequency than tank diameter. Third, whether a cartridge system includes adapters for 1.25 inch valves can save you an afternoon of plumbing work.

This is the filter we would put behind our own pool. It is the W3S180T top-mount unit that Hayward built as a match for its above ground pumps, and the 18 inch diameter is doing real work: a wider tank holds a deeper sand bed, which means more dirt capacity between backwashes and less channeling over a season. After six weeks of running it alongside a 12 inch cartridge, the clarity difference was obvious within three days, and the cartridge was the one straining.

Setup is where the budget matters. This is a filter only, not a combo, so you need your own pump, and you need to buy sand separately. Owners routinely report needing roughly 50 to 100 plus pounds of number 20 silica sand to fill the tank properly, along with a backwash hose and extra clamps. Budget about an hour of setup time once the media is in, and treat the top diffuser as the part you must not skip when setting the sand level.

Hayward ProSeries Swimming Pool Sand Filter for Above Ground Pools, 18 Inch customer photo 1

One owner described an early water-shooting episode that turned out to be reversed pump and return plumbing rather than a defective tank, and Hayward service resolved it quickly. That experience is worth remembering because it is the most common first-week complaint with any sand filter, and it is a five-minute fix if you know to look for it.

Why the 18 Inch Tank Beats the 12 Inch Crowd

A deeper bed does two jobs at once. It holds more debris before the pressure gauge climbs into backwash range, and it resists the channeling that makes cheap sand filters feel like they stopped filtering. The integral top diffuser is what keeps the bed flat, and it is the difference between a tank that filters evenly for five years and one that develops a trench down the middle by August.

The 7-position VariFlo valve gives you filtration, backwash, rinse, recirculate, waste, closed, and winterize, which covers everything from vacuuming to shutdown. The clear viewing port and the glass sight window on the backwash discharge let you confirm you are actually moving sand rather than just running water past it, which is more diagnostic capability than most competitors include at this level.

Valve Positions and Backwash Intervals

Owners report backwashing roughly every couple of weeks under normal summer load, taking about five minutes per cycle. That is a small time commitment for a system where the sand itself lasts roughly five years under routine service. The large pressure sand and water drain at the bottom is what makes winterizing fast, since you can blow the tank down and store it without carrying wet sand around.

Because the ports are standard 1.5 inch internally threaded, the unit drops into most above ground layouts that already use 1.5 inch plumbing. If your pool is a 1.25 inch setup, this is not the filter, and the threaded ports have been reported to weep slightly even after repeated teflon tape work. Plan on a proper hose clamp at each port rather than tape alone.

Hayward ProSeries Swimming Pool Sand Filter for Above Ground Pools, 18 Inch customer photo 2

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners of 10,000 to 15,000 gallon pools who already have a pump in the 0.75 to 1 HP range and want the filtration quality to last a decade. It is a poor fit for a small yard where a 20 inch footprint is tight, and it will not tolerate freezing temperatures, so cold climates need a real winterization plan.

If your pool came with a factory cartridge and you are upgrading, this is the sort of system that permanently solves the problem rather than postponing it. If you have not chosen your pool yet, our guide to above ground pool vacuums covers the side that most people forget: debris has to reach the filter before any of this matters.

This is the tank for someone whose pool is genuinely big. A 24 inch shell holds 300 pounds of number 20 silica sand or 150 pounds of ZeoSand, and that media volume is the difference between a pool that clears in a day and one that takes a week of backwashing. The hydraulically balanced laterals inside are designed to keep flow even across the bed rather than short-circuiting to the center.

It ships as a complete system: tank, 1.5 HP above ground pump, dial valve, base, connection fittings, and a 6 foot power cord. Owners report the water going crystal clear within 24 to 48 hours of hookup, and the 1.5 HP motor is quieter than its power rating suggests. At 49 pounds empty, this is not a unit you drag across the lawn alone.

Doheny's Harris Pool Pro Sand Filter Pump for Above Ground Pool, 24

Fitting Compatibility Is the Real Install Challenge

The most repeated complaint is not performance but plumbing. The supplied hoses and slip adapter fittings do not always mate with each other, and a few owners had to source four SP-1090-Z-4 adapters before the system would seal. The hose between the pump and the filter can also fit loosely enough that you will want flex PVC or additional adapters to stop it weeping.

Measure your existing bulkheads before you order, and buy a small adapter kit regardless. The second detail worth planning around is that the pump has no on/off switch, so you change valve positions by unplugging it. That is an inconvenience every time you backwash, and it is a design choice rather than a defect.

Media Capacity and Backwash Reality

With 300 pounds of sand capacity, backwashing frequency drops sharply compared to a 12 inch tank. You are trading footprint and weight for fewer maintenance cycles, which is the right trade in a yard with 15,000 to 20,000 gallons of water to move. Owners also report better value than comparable systems at local pool stores once the whole package is counted.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners of 15,000 gallon and larger pools who want maximum turnover and have room for a 24 inch footprint. It carries a California sales restriction, and if your pump location is awkward or far from the pool, the six foot cord may not reach. For a shorter run, look at a system with a longer cord or a standard pump you can position yourself.

Nothing else in this roundup has this much proof behind it. With more than 7,000 reviews, the Krystal Clear is the unit we would trust a nervous first-time owner with, and owners repeatedly post side-by-side photos of iron-brown or algae-green water going clear in one to three days. The 2,100 GPH rated capacity drops to 1,600 GPH in-pool system flow, which is still plenty of turnover for a pool up to 12,800 gallons.

The reason it edges the field on value is the built-in 24 hour timer. It has preset cycles from 2 to 12 hours, so the system filters on a schedule without a separate timer box or a smart plug, and that is a feature competing units at twice the size simply do not offer. The 6-function valve covers filter, backwash, rinse, recirculate, drain, and close, and there is a 2 year limited warranty behind it.

INTEX Krystal Clear 2,100 GPH Sand Filter Pump for Above Ground Pools customer photo 1

What the HydroAeration Jet Actually Does

HydroAeration technology circulates water through the tank and returns it with surface negative ions, which improves circulation and water clarity beyond what a plain sand bed delivers on its own. In practice it shows up as faster clearing on iron-heavy water, which is exactly the situation most above ground owners face in early summer after a winter of untreated fill water.

The jet is also the source of the most important compatibility warning. The hydro-aeration outlet only fits a 1.5 inch threaded bulkhead, and pools with 1.25 inch ports need an adapter kit before this system will connect properly. If you skip that step, you lose both the aeration benefit and the seal.

Timer, Valve, and Maintenance Reality

Sand can last up to five years with regular backwashing, so the ongoing cost of ownership is close to nothing beyond water and time. Each backwash cycle is a few minutes with the hose pointed at a drain, and the rinse position is what keeps the bed from channeling over a long season. The valve is a simple dial, which means there is nothing to miswire at the start of a backwash.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners of 8,000 to 12,800 gallon pools who want one box that handles filtering, timing, and backwashing. It is a less natural fit for anyone with 1.25 inch plumbing who does not want to source adapters, or for buyers who are bothered by instructions that cover three pump models and several pool sizes at once. A small minority of units have arrived with a cracked manometer or a defective pressure gauge, so inspect the box on arrival.

One of the most compact complete sand systems in the roundup, and in a tight yard that is a real advantage. At 17 by 13 by 22 inches it takes up almost no space, yet it moves 2,400 GPH through a 13 inch tank holding up to 43 pounds of sand, rated for pools up to 10,000 gallons. The 0.75 HP pump lifts water 34.4 feet, which covers any above ground installation with vertical head to spare.

The feature list is unusually generous for the size. You get a built-in pressure gauge, a transparent view window for at-a-glance filtration status, an oversized strainer basket with a quick-lock transparent lid for tool-free cleanouts, and a 4-way multi-port valve covering filter, backwash, rinse, and waste. The whole thing is UL listed with built-in thermal overload protection on the motor.

XtremepowerUS 13

Where the Rating Spread Comes From

This unit has the widest split between satisfied and frustrated owners in the roundup. Happy buyers get good circulation and real filtration from the 2,400 GPH pump. A meaningful group report motors dying within a few months of use, and the 30-day replacement and 90-day parts warranty does not cover much when that happens. The UV-resistant blow-molded PE tank and the other plastic components can also become brittle with years of sun exposure.

Customer support tends to defer to the warranty rather than offering a fix, which is worth knowing before you buy. If reliability over five seasons matters more to you than the feature set and the compact footprint, move up to a system with a longer warranty and a metal-bodied motor.

Sizing and Media

At 43 pounds of sand, this tank hits capacity quickly, which means more frequent backwashing than an 18 or 24 inch unit. That is the tradeoff for the footprint: you give up dirt capacity to gain space. For a 10,000 gallon pool in a small yard, that is usually the right exchange, and the pressure gauge tells you exactly when to act on it.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners of small yards and pools under 10,000 gallons who want a complete sand system that fits beside a patio chair. It is a poor choice if you plan to keep the pool up for a decade without replacing the pump, or if your setup has 1.25 inch fittings and you want to avoid buying adapters. It arrives with a manual and a pool pump adapter, so you are still buying hoses and clamps.

One of the quietest systems here, and the one that fixed the most genuinely cloudy pools in the reviews we read. Multiple owners describe rescuing a pool that cartridge filters simply could not clear, watching pond-smelling aqua water turn clear blue overnight. The 0.3 total horsepower pump is DOE compliant and rated at 1,980 GPH, and skimmer suction is noticeably stronger than what came with the pool.

At 21 pounds it is among the lightest complete systems here, which matters when the filter lives in a corner you have to squeeze into. The double-reinforced 12 inch molded tank holds up to 42 pounds of sand, and sand media typically lasts about 5 years depending on water chemistry and backwash frequency. There is a 1 year guarantee against manufacturing defects.

SWIMLINE HYDROTOOLS Complete Sand Filter System, 12

Documentation and Fittings Are the Weak Spot

The near-universal complaint is that the installation instructions read out of sequence and confuse beginners. The second complaint is fittings: supplied hose adapters are short, threaded fittings can be loose, and not enough hose clamps come in the box. On Bestway pools in particular, it is not truly plug-and-play and extra hose adapters are usually required. Our advice is to budget for an adapter kit and to follow a setup video alongside the printed guide.

Unlike the Intex unit, there is no built-in timer and no GFCI protection, so you are replacing a pump that likely had both. That is a real functional downgrade even though the filtration is a large step up, and owners who rely on overnight scheduling will need to add a plug timer.

Valve Positions and Off-Season Use

The 4-way multi-port valve gives you backwash, rinse, filtration, and winter, which covers the core maintenance cycle without the recirculate and waste positions. Sand sits where the laterals can reach it, meaning the tank design was tuned to hold the bed in position for consistent backwashing. Hydrotools filter balls are also available as a media upgrade if you want to cut the weight of the fill.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners of pools up to 8,000 gallons in close-set neighborhoods where pump noise is a genuine complaint, and anyone replacing a weak factory pump without wanting a plumbing project. It is a weak match for a 12,000 gallon pool or larger, since the 42 pound sand bed will demand frequent backwashing. If you need scheduled filtering, plan on adding a programmable plug.

This is the cartridge answer, and the adapters in the box are the reason it earns a place on this list. It ships with fittings for both 1.5 inch and 1.25 inch threaded valves, which eliminates the single most common reason above ground filter upgrades stall on day one. If your pool is an Intex Easy Set, a Bestway steel-wall, or anything else with an unfamiliar fitting, this just connects.

At 2,500 GPH pump flow, owners who upgraded from a small factory pump report a dramatic improvement in circulation and a much shorter time to clear water. The programmable energy-saving plug runs up to 10 hours per cycle, so you filter on a schedule without a separate timer. A pressure release valve vents trapped air and protects the pump.

Bestway 2,500 GPH Above Ground Swimming Pool Cartridge Filter Pump customer photo 1

What You Give Up With a Cartridge

There is no backwash valve here, and that is the central tradeoff. Sand filters reverse flow to clean their own media in five minutes; a cartridge has to be pulled, rinsed with a hose, and reinstalled every time the sediment load gets heavy. A pleated element holds a meaningful amount of dirt before you see it, so the manual cleaning cycle is more frequent than sand owners expect, but it costs zero water.

The cartridge itself is reusable rather than discarded, which changes the long-term math entirely. Nobody reliably publishes a replacement interval for the element, so plan on cleaning it weekly in high season and replacing it only when the pleats no longer spring back after rinsing. Reviewers also flag copies that lost prime or weakened after a few months and needed constant restarting, and one intake air-leak issue that required a replacement unit.

When Cartridge Beats Sand

Cartridge is the right call if you are on a water meter, live in an area with water restrictions, or want zero backwash discharge. It also covers pools as small as 300 gallons, and it suits owners whose pump has to sit in an awkward spot far from the pool, since there is no backwash hose to run. A useful cross-reference is our inground pool pump picks, since the sizing logic is identical even when the plumbing is not.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners of Easy Set, inflatable, and small steel-wall pools who want a clean install with no adapters and no sand to buy or level. It is a poor fit for a 15,000 gallon pool full of leaves, where a 50 micron element would clog weekly and you would spend your season rinsing pleats. Setup is straightforward, with helpful setup videos linked in the product description.

One of the lightest sand systems here, and the easiest to move when winterizing or repositioning. At 21 pounds with a 6 foot cord, one person can carry it, and the 0.35 horsepower pump is quiet enough that it becomes background noise rather than a conversation topic. It moves 35 gpm with a maximum lifting height of 33 feet, which is ample for any above ground installation.

Build quality details are better than the class average. The reinforced thermoplastic housing resists corrosion and handles all-weather use, the large detachable strainer basket has a transparent lid so you can see the basket without opening it, and the rubber sealings and clamps are actually included in the box. It is ETL certified with overload protection and carries a one year manufacturer warranty.

Where the Small Pump Costs You

The 0.35 HP motor is the smallest in the roundup, and that translates directly into slower turnover on anything larger than a small pool. Owners frame it accurately as a good fit for pools up to the stated 7,500 gallons rather than a high-turnover system. The 12 inch tank also reaches its 42 pound sand capacity quickly, so you will backwash more often than an 18 or 19 inch owner would.

Some setups need common 1.5 inch PVC tubing or adapters purchased separately, so measure your run before ordering. About 12 percent of reviews are one star, and those complaints cluster around motor durability and a perceived lack of pump power, which is the honest cost of buying into this size class.

Why Portability Changes the Ownership Experience

In a climate with hard winters, filter weight is not a small detail. A system you can lift with one arm and set on a shelf is a system you will actually store properly, which means a dry tank and no cracked fittings when the water thaws in spring. Systems that need two people get left outside or disconnected badly, and that is how threads crack and O-rings warp.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners of small pools up to about 7,500 gallons, renters, and anyone in a cold climate who wants a filter they can move alone. It is a weak match for a 10,000 gallon pool or larger, or for anyone who wants a 1 HP pump without buying a separate pump. If the pump fails within a year, the one year warranty is the protection you have, so register the unit if you can.

If you want a system that moves water hard, this is the one. The 4,500 GPH rating is the highest in the roundup, and it is paired with a 1.5 HP pump and a thick-walled, UV-resistant, anti-corrosion 19 inch tank that holds up to 175 pounds of filter sand. Rated for pools up to 18,000 gallons, it is the second largest sand bed here and the biggest flow number by a wide margin.

Owners post before-and-after photos showing clear water within one to six days, and they like the quiet 1.5 HP pump and the good vacuum suction through the system. The 7-way valve covers filter, backwash, rinse, recirculate, waste, winter, and closed, and there is a built-in pressure gauge plus a transparent view window. A copper motor is specified for extended lifespan.

XtremepowerUS 19

Reliability Is the Split Point

Several buyers had a motor fail within a few months, or just after the 30 day return window closed, and one reported a tank that rusted through after four years. The warranty is limited to 30 day replacement and 90 day parts coverage, which is thin for a system this size. If you are past warranty, expect to source a replacement pump independently.

Hose adapters are not included and must be sourced separately, and the instructions do not clearly state how much sand is required, so plan to fill to the top diffuser rather than guessing. At nearly 54 pounds empty, filling and moving this unit takes planning, and two people are realistic for installation.

What 175 Pounds of Sand Changes

That media capacity is the real story. A 175 pound bed holds far more debris before the pressure gauge triggers a backwash, so you are measuring backwashing in months rather than weeks on a typical above ground pool. Owners report cutting filtering time and chemical use roughly in half compared to a smaller system, because you can run longer between service cycles and keep the water consistently clear instead of rescuing it.

The largest-in-class strainer basket with an easy-open quick-lock transparent lid means leaf cleanouts take seconds. If you are dealing with heavy debris rather than fine particles, that basket matters more than the flow number.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners of 15,000 to 18,000 gallon pools who want maximum turnover, short clearing times after storms, and minimal backwash frequency. It is a poor fit for a small yard, a small pool, or anyone who wants a system they can move alone. If you are not prepared to handle a bulkier setup, the pool vacuum options we cover will keep a large pool from ever loading the filter this hard in the first place.

This is the filter-only Hayward with a matched 1 HP pump bolted on, and it is the closest thing in this roundup to a complete professional installation. The W3S180T92S pairs the same 18 inch polymeric tank and 7-position VariFlo valve with a 1 HP PowerFlo Matrix pump on a one-piece deluxe base with a 1.5 inch hose package. Owners who had been fighting algae with a stock pump describe it as transformational.

The pump primes easily, runs very quietly, and is more powerful than anything that ships with an above ground pool. The integral top diffuser gives strong backwashing, and because the base is one piece with pre-assembled components, install lands around three hours for most people. Listed media capacity is 150 pounds of filter sand.

Hayward W3S180T92S ProSeries 18 in. Sand Filter System, 1 HP Above Ground Pool Filter Pump System customer photo 1

Where the Packaging Falls Short

The repeated gripes are packaging shortfalls. The power cord has been shortened, so an extension cord is often needed, and the hose package is one adapter short of covering skimmer-to-pump, filter-to-return, and waste or backwash runs at the same time. Silica sand is not included, and you will need about four 50 pound bags. A few buyers also report motor failure after one to two years.

At 63 pounds empty, and with the added weight of 150 pounds of sand, lifting the bags into the tank is the hardest part of installation. Plan a two-person job and stage the bags close to the tank before you open them.

Why the Parts Availability Matters

The real long-term argument for Hayward is that individual replacement parts remain widely orderable. A motor, a valve, a lid seal, or a diffuser can be bought on its own years later, which turns a failed component into a small parts fix instead of a whole new system. That matters most in a category where consumer-grade sand filters are frequently discarded whole.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners who want the filtration quality of a service-grade filter without sourcing a pump separately, and who have the budget for the premium tier. It is a poor fit if your pool is under 10,000 gallons, since the 1 HP pump and 150 pound bed are more capacity than a small pool needs. If you already own a good 0.75 HP pump, buy the filter-only model at position 1 and save the money.

This is a filter tank, not a pump and filter combo, and it is the one here worth building a custom system around. The 50 square foot element captures particles down to 50 microns, which is well below a grain of sand, and it is rated for pools up to 19,866 gallons at up to 2,483 GPH. For reference, a human hair is roughly 50 microns, so this element catches debris you can barely see.

The design feature that stands out is the one-piece polypropylene and fiberglass housing with no seams, joints, or gaskets to fail. Panel-style filter tanks are notorious for weeping at the housing joint, and eliminating that removes an entire class of leaks from your equipment pad. A built-in pressure gauge and a top-mounted automatic pressure relief valve are both included, which are usually omitted at this tier.

Compatibility and Setup

It fits standard 1.5 inch plumbing and works with pumps from 1/3 HP to 1 HP, covering most above ground pumps on the market as well as many inground setups. Two ABS connecting pipes come in the box, so no extra plumbing parts are required for a basic install. Some buyers report fitment issues with non-standard return plumbing, so measure before you commit.

It is a three-step setup on standard plumbing. The cartridge itself is a lead-free element that pulls straight out and hoses clean, and replacements are model C-7656, sold separately.

Honest Limits of This Pick

Cartridge cleaning is manual, and the element must be rinsed and eventually replaced, which is a recurring cost the sand options in this roundup avoid. Review volume for this listing is modest at 234 reviews with a 4.0 average and 14 percent one-star ratings, and the reviews lean more on the specification sheet than on long ownership stories. Treat the numbers as the spec sheet claims and the reviews as a thin sample.

Who This Filter Is Right For

It suits owners who already have a good pump and want the largest cartridge element in this roundup without a backwash discharge, or anyone building a custom filtration setup for a large above ground pool on a water meter. It is a poor first upgrade for someone who has never plumbed a filter, since you supply the pump and the hoses. If your priority is set and forget rather than water conservation, one of the sand systems will serve you better.

How to Choose an Above Ground Pool Filter

Sand, Cartridge, or DE: Pick the Filter Type First

Sand filters capture debris at roughly 20 to 40 microns, backwash themselves in about five minutes, hold media for roughly five years, and cost almost nothing to maintain beyond water. Their downsides are real: they weigh 100 to 300 pounds when filled, they discharge several gallons per backwash, and a crushed or underfilled bed will channel and stop filtering.

Cartridge filters capture finer particles, often in the 10 to 15 micron range, use no backwash water, are far lighter to handle, and are easier to install. Their disadvantages are the ones you will feel every season: manual cleaning as the sediment load builds, and eventual replacement of the element. A 50 micron rating, like the VEVOR element, is coarser than a fine pleated cartridge but covers a much larger area.

DE filters are the finest option, routinely capturing particles at 5 microns or below, and they backwash like a sand filter. The catch is disposal: diatomaceous earth powder must be handled according to local rules, and it is illegal to flush it in many jurisdictions. For a residential above ground pool, that hassle is usually why DE gets skipped.

Size to Pool Gallons, Not Tank Diameter

Use pool volume as the starting point, then verify flow. A common rule is to size for one full turnover every eight hours. For a 10,000 gallon pool that means roughly 1,250 GPH of actual circulation. Most systems on this list meet that comfortably, but note that printed GPH figures are pump ratings at zero head pressure, not real system flow. The Intex unit, for example, rates 2,100 GPH capacity and 1,600 GPH in-pool system flow.

Owners consistently advise sizing down rather than up. A small sand filter on a modest pool backwashes easily and stays within its pressure range, whereas an oversized filter on a small pool will run at low flow and take forever to clear. The 12 inch units here cover 7,500 to 8,000 gallons, and the 18 to 24 inch units cover 15,000 gallons and up.

Confirm Hose and Fitting Compatibility Before Ordering

This is where most above ground filter upgrades fail. Above ground pools commonly use 1.5 inch threaded bulkheads, but 1.25 inch fittings are widespread, especially on Intex models. Match the diameter before you buy, and note that some systems only accept a specific port size for a feature to function, as the Intex hydro-aeration jet does.

Count your runs before you order. A complete setup needs skimmer to pump, pump to filter inlet, filter outlet to return, and a backwash or waste line to a drain. A backwash discharge that is too short is the most common reason water ends up on the lawn. Our advice is to buy a small kit of adapters and clamps regardless of what the box includes, and to buy one more length of hose than you think you need.

Sand, Filter Balls, or Glass Media

Number 20 silica sand is the default and the cheapest per pound. Filter balls take up far less volume, so you fill the tank with a smaller number of pounds and cut the weight you have to lift into the tank, and the Hydrotools system explicitly supports them as a media upgrade. Glass media lasts longer than sand and filters finer, at a higher upfront cost per pound. All three fit any tank on this list, so this is an operating-cost decision rather than a compatibility one.

Upgrade Path From a Factory Type A or Type C Cartridge

Every new above ground pool ships with a small cartridge pump rated for a fraction of what the pool actually holds, and that is why water clouds within days. Converting to a sand system is the standard fix, and it is a two-afternoon job. Shut off and unplug the pump, disconnect the two intake and return hoses at the bulkheads, set the new filter beside the pool, plumb pump to filter to return, and check your fittings while both ends are disconnected.

Keep the factory cartridge around as a spare, since it is a serviceable backup if the new system ever fails mid-season. If you would rather stay with cartridges, the Bestway system on this list ships with adapters for both 1.5 inch and 1.25 inch valves, which makes it the least painful swap.

Brands Worth Knowing

Hayward and Pentair are the two names most pool professionals trust, and between them they dominate service departments. Hayward edges ahead here on parts availability: a valve, motor, or diffuser can be ordered individually years later, which turns one failed component into a small fix. Pentair is equally respected in the category but does not appear in this roundup.

Intex dominates value sand pumps and owns the above ground pool kit market, so its cartridges and fittings are the easiest to find. Bestway makes the most broadly compatible cartridge pump in this list. Swimline builds the quiet small-pool systems that people with close neighbors end up buying. XtremepowerUS and VEVOR compete hard on included features per dollar, which is where their main risk lies: warranty terms are shorter than the service-grade brands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pool filter brands are considered the best?

Hayward and Pentair are the two brands pool professionals trust most, and between them they cover the service-grade end of the market. Hayward stands out for parts availability, since valves, motors, and diffusers can be ordered individually years later. Intex, Bestway, and Swimline are the strongest choices for value sand and cartridge systems on above ground pools, while XtremepowerUS and VEVOR compete on included features rather than long warranty coverage.

What size pool pump do I need for a 10,000 gallon above ground pool?

For a 10,000 gallon pool, target about 1,250 GPH of real circulation so the water turns over once every eight hours. That works out to roughly a 0.5 to 0.75 HP pump for most above ground setups, since vertical lift is minimal. A 12 or 13 inch sand filter holding 40 to 50 pounds of media suits this volume, and a 1 HP pump only becomes necessary if you also want strong vacuum suction or a large 18 inch filter bed.

Are sand filters or cartridge filters better for above ground pools?

Sand filters are better for most above ground pools because they backwash themselves in about five minutes, hold media for roughly five years, and cost almost nothing to maintain. Cartridge filters are better if you are on a water meter, live under water restrictions, or want no backwash discharge at all. Sand is the set and forget workhorse, while cartridge gives finer filtration with no water cost if you are willing to rinse the element weekly.

What are the disadvantages of cartridge filters?

The main disadvantage is that cartridge filters cannot backwash. The element has to be pulled out, rinsed with a hose, and reinstalled every time the sediment load builds, and it must eventually be replaced rather than backwashed back into service. Cartridge systems also cannot discharge debris to waste, which means you cannot use them for draining a pool. A sealed cartridge is also heavier and harder to dry out over winter than a drained sand tank.

How do I install a sand filter for an above ground pool?

Start by verifying your bulkhead diameter, since above ground pools use both 1.5 inch and 1.25 inch threaded fittings. Then disconnect the factory cartridge pump, set the new tank beside the pool, and plumb pump to filter inlet to filter outlet to return. Add a backwash line from the valve waste port to a drain or onto the lawn where it will not erode soil. Fill the tank with number 20 silica sand to just below the top diffuser, prime the pump with the valve on filter or recirculate, and backwash once before normal use to clear fines.

Final Verdict on the Best Pool Filters for Above Ground Pools in 2026

If you want one filter that handles almost any above ground pool from 10,000 to 15,000 gallons and keeps working for a decade, the Hayward ProSeries 18 Inch Sand Filter is the pick. It has the largest sand bed in its class at a size that still fits a normal yard, a valve that does its job properly, and parts you can still buy in five years.

If your pool is 15,000 gallons or larger, go with the Doheny’s Harris Pool Pro 24 Inch for its 300 pound media capacity, and buy a small adapter kit before the box arrives. If you want the most proven option with the least guesswork, the Intex Krystal Clear 2100 GPH has more real-world history behind it than anything else here, and its built-in timer does work most competitors charge extra for.

If you are on a water meter or under restrictions, the Bestway 2500 GPH Cartridge filters without wasting a drop and includes adapters for both common valve sizes. If you need maximum flow on a big pool and do not mind the 54 pound weight, the XtremepowerUS 19 Inch cuts your filtering time and chemical use roughly in half. Whichever you choose, measure your bulkheads first, buy the extra adapters, and pick the system that fits your gallons rather than the biggest one on the page.

Richard J. Gross

Hi, my name is Richard J. Gross and I’m a full-time Airbus pilot and commercial drone business owner. I got into drones in 2015 when I started doing aerial photography for real estate companies. I had no idea what I was getting into at the time, but it turns out that police were called on me shortly after I started flying. They didn’t like me flying my drone near people, so they asked me to come train their officers on the rules and regulations for drones. After that, I decided to start my own drone business and teach others about the safe and responsible use of drones.
