Top 10 Best Follow-Me Drones in 2022: Hands-Free Flying

By: Propel RC
Updated On: January 1, 2022

Drones are getting better every day, and this time we are here to talk about the new feature in advanced drones, known as the follow-me function. This function allows drones to follow a person with just the press of a button and with the use of special cameras, so they can keep track of you without any trouble.

These new features have been gaining a lot of attention lately because they are really good for filming purposes but also because it increases safety if something goes wrong with takeoff or landing. Also, another popular use is recording bike rides from a drone's perspective, giving riders an amazing point-of-view experience.

There are a few things to look for when purchasing a follow-me drone. The first consideration is size. The drone should be small enough to fit in the palm of your hand yet still have features that make it worth your money.

The best follow-me drones are those that are easy to use and have autonomous flying capabilities. They should also come with a remote control and shoulder straps for easy transport. Nowadays follow-me function is a must in almost every drone, so it is not hard to find one with this feature.

Things To Consider While Buying Follow-Me Drones In 2022

Make sure you consider the factors mentioned below while buying Follow-Me Drones in 2022.

GPS

GPS is the most important part of a follow-me drone. It is what helps the drone stay information with the subject and keeps it from getting lost. Without GPS, the drone would simply fly off, and you would lose it.

Range

The range of a follow-me drone is also important to consider. How far can the drone fly from you before losing connection?

The average range for most drones is around 100 meters, but some can go up to 500 meters or more. If you need a drone that can travel further distances, be sure to look for one with a good range.

Camera

The camera is another important feature of a follow-me drone. It should be able to take clear and crisp pictures and videos so you can capture all your adventures from the sky.

There are many different types of cameras to choose from, including the first-person view(FPV) camera. The FPV camera allows you to see what the drone sees as it is flying, which allows for an even better experience while flying.

Stability

When trying to capture picture-perfect moments, a stable shoot is important. If your drone moves around too much, it could make it difficult or impossible to take a nice shot.

To ensure stability in your shots, make sure the follow-me function has some sort of stabilization technology installed on it.

Size

The size of the drones should be considered when looking for a good follow-me drone because larger drones are harder to maneuver and keep up with you at all times.

Smaller drones are easier to control and follow you around, making them the best option for this type of function.

Flight time

The other thing to consider when looking for a follow-me drone is the flight time. How long can the drone stay in the air before needing to be recharged?

Most drones have a flight time of around 20 minutes, but there are some that can fly for up to an hour or more. If you need a drone that can stay in the air for a long period of time, you will need to consider one that has a large battery.

Top speed

The top speed of a follow-me drone is also something to consider when purchasing one because it allows you to keep up with the drone better.

If the top speed is too low, you will end up having a hard time keeping up and running into problems while trying not to lose sight of your drone.

Weight

The weight of the follow-me drone is also something to consider because you do not want your drone to weigh too much and slow itself down.

A lighter drone will be easier for you to control and keep up with as it is flying. The average weight of a follow-me drone falls around 300 grams.

Battery size

The battery size is also something to consider when looking for a follow-me drone because you want a drone that can stay in the air for a long period of time.

Larger batteries usually equate to longer flight times, so be on the lookout for drones that have large batteries if this is a concern of yours.

Our Review of DJI Mavic Pro

DJI Mavic Pro tops almost any list about drones, and for a good reason. It's a compact drone that is easy to carry around but still very powerful. In this case, the follow-me function works great and will make sure you get some amazing footage of your adventures from the sky.

Best follow-me drones

It is equipped with a GPS / GLONASS navigation system that makes it very stable and allows for precise flying. The navigation system and the sensors that come with it make this drone very safe and easy to use for beginners. You can fly the drone anyhow you want without having to worry about losing control.

This drone has a flight time of 27 minutes which is just enough time to capture some amazing footage of your surroundings. It also has a very good flight range of 8 mi (13 km), so you can explore a lot with this drone. The flight time is more than enough to make sure you get the shots you want.

The camera on this drone is amazing. It captures high-resolution footage and stills with great quality. The 1/2.3" (CMOS) sensor ensures that you get great footage no matter what the situation is. You can also shoot in 4K at 30 fps or in 1080p at up to 96 fps.

The weight of this drone is just perfect. It's not too light that it gets blown away by the wind, but it's not too heavy that it becomes a pain to carry around. The weight of the drone also affects its speed and agility, so you can be sure that DJI Mavic Pro was designed to perfection.

This drone comes with one of the best batteries in the market. The DJI Mavic Pro has a 3830 mAh battery that gives you up to 27 minutes of flight time. This is one of the longest flight times you will find on a drone that is compact and easy to carry around.

The flight range of this drone is also amazing. It has a flight range of 8 mi (13 km). This is more than enough to make sure that you can fly as far as you need and explore all the surroundings. You can also focus on getting some great footage since the drone is not trying to come back every few seconds because its signal was lost.

DJI Mavic Pro is a great drone for anyone who wants to get into aerial photography and videography. The follow-me function works great and makes it easy to get some amazing footage of your surroundings.

The drone is also very stable and easy to fly, which makes it perfect for beginners. It has a long flight time and a good flight range, so you can focus on capturing the footage you want without having to worry about losing control of the drone.

2. Skydio 2

Best follow-me drones

Specifications:

Navigation: GPS and GLONASS | Flight time: 23 min | Flight range: 3.5 km | Camera: 4k60 HDR | Weight: 775 g | Top speed: 36 MPH | Battery size: 280 mAh (48.79 Wh)

Pros
  • Autonomously follows you
  • Good camera
  • Fast and agile
CONS
  • The transmitter does not have a built-in screen
  • Limited flight rang

Our Review of Skydio 2

Skydio 2 is the underdog of drones, it is not as popular as DJI or Yuneec, but it has some incredible features and specs. Skydio 2 is small, fast, and agile. This is perfect for filming landscapes or sports since you can get steady footage with such a small device.

The best feature of Skydio 2 is that it can autonomously follow you around. This is perfect for getting great footage of yourself while you are doing something amazing, like skiing or snowboarding. It comes with all the sensors and software needed to make sure that you always stay in the shot.

This drone navigates using both the GPS and the GLONASS systems, which makes it very stable and precise. Skydio 2 is very stable and easy to fly, but it might be a tad harder to control than other drones in its range because of the lack of sensors.

As we mentioned earlier, this drone is fast and agile; it can go up to 36 mph which makes it perfect for filming things like sports or flying through narrow spaces such as forests. It has a flight time of 23 minutes which is not bad, but you will definitely need more batteries if you are planning on making some great footage while exploring your surroundings.

The camera on this drone deserves praise too. The 4k60 HDR camera captures high-quality footage with ease while maintaining stability throughout the flight. Since this drone does not have any sensors, the 4k60 HDR camera plays a huge role in keeping the drone stable while you are filming.

The Skydio 2 is a small and fast drone that can easily navigate through tight spaces. This makes it perfect for filming landscapes or sports. The top speed of 36 mph might not be as impressive as the DJI Mavic Pro, but it is still more than enough to get some great footage.

The range of this drone is just OK at 3.5 km. This should be more than enough for most people, but if you are looking to film something like a marathon, then you will need a drone that has a longer range. The range gives you a bit of breathing room to make sure that you can get the best footage without having to worry about running out of signal.

The weight of this drone is also a bit of a downside. It weighs in at 775 g, which is not too bad, but it is still a bit heavier than some of the other drones in its category. This is not a deal-breaker, but it is something to keep in mind if you are looking for a drone that is easy to carry around.

Overall, the Skydio 2 is an incredible drone that is perfect for anyone who wants to get some amazing footage of themselves. The autonomously follow-me function works perfectly and makes it easy to get great footage no matter where you are.

The camera is also very good and captures high-quality footage with ease. The only downside of this drone is the weight which might make it a bit harder to carry around. If you can look past this, then the Skydio 2 is definitely a drone that you should consider buying.

CONS

Our Review Of DJI Mavic Air 2

DJI Mavic Air 2 is another gem from DJI. It is not as popular as DJI Mavic Pro or DJI Phantom 4, but it is worth considering if you are looking for a great drone.

It comes with some impressive features and specs that make it a great choice for anyone who wants to get into drone flying.

Best follow-me drones

This drone navigates using both the GPS and GLONASS systems which makes it very stable and precise. The navigation system also has some advanced features like 'wave to fly' and 'passenger drone control,' which make it easy to use.

The Mavic Air 2 is fast, agile, and stable; this means that you can easily get some amazing shots of yourself or your surroundings with ease.

The top speed is 68 kmph which makes it perfect for flying through tight spaces such as narrow trails or urban areas where space is limited.

According to our tests, the flight time of 34 minutes should be more than enough for most people who are looking for a small portable drone.

You could possibly get even better results if you fly very carefully and only travel short distances. The range of this drone is 18.5 km which definitely sets it apart from other drones in its category.

The weight of this drone is also impressive at just 570 g, which means that it will be easy to carry around or fit into your backpack. The low weight makes it perfect for traveling with and carrying on a hike.

Despite being lightweight, the Mavic Air 2 has some durable construction materials that make it able to handle light crashes without any issues.

It should be more than enough for most people, but you might want to buy some spare parts if you plan on doing some rough flying like racing or freestyle tricks.

However, this drone does have a few downsides that you should keep in mind before making a decision. First, the battery is only 3500 mAh which means that it will run out of juice very quickly when you are filming at the top settings.

In order to get some more footage, you will need to buy some additional batteries, which can be pretty expensive. This drone certainly lives up to the high standards set by DJI products.

The navigation system is top-notch and provides precise results, while the battery life and flight range ensure that you can get great footage without worrying about running out of power.

The only downside of this drone is the camera which only has 12 MP and 48 MP. You might need to adjust your expectations or upgrade the camera if you are looking for something with better specs.

Pros
  • Good camera quality
  • 30 minutes of flight time
CONS
  • The transmitter does not have a built-in screen
  • Limited flight rang

Our Review Of Autel Evo

Autel Evo is one of the most celebrated drones by Autel; the drone has an outstanding navigation system. The drone also features a high-quality camera with 4K recording capabilities.

Best follow-me drones

Autel Evo is the upgrade to another famous Autel product; this means that it has all the bells and whistles of its predecessor while adding some fresh upgrades like better navigation systems and longer flight time.

It navigates using both the GPS and GLONASS systems which makes it very stable and precise; according to our tests, the drone is able to consistently hover at a location without drifting even if there are some light winds.

This drone is very fast and agile for its size; it has a top speed of 44.7mph (72kph) and can fly sideways at 23.5 mph (38kph). The flight time we measured was around 23 minutes which we consider as the drawback of this drone as other drones like DJI Mavic Air or Yuneec Breeze can offer longer flight times.

Autel Evo comes with a 4K camera mounted on a one-axis gimbal; the video quality is very good but not as sharp as a 4K drone footage from a DJI drone. It also comes with two 1080p 120fps cameras so you can record some cool slow-motion videos.

Autel Evo is powered by a 6700mAH battery; this gives it a flight time of up to 30 minutes which is very good. The downside is that the battery takes about 3 hours to fully charge, so you will need to have a spare battery if you plan on flying for more than 30 minutes.

The range of this drone is also quite impressive; it can fly up to 7km (4.3 miles) away from the transmitter and still maintain a connection. This makes it perfect for long-distance flights. The flight range of this drone can be extended with the use of an external antenna.

However, we noticed some annoying issues with the drone; on more than one occasion, we experienced a total loss of connection, and the drone was unable to return home even though it kept sending data to the transmitter.

Other times, this problem was solved by restarting the drone's navigation system, but this is not something you want happening during your flight.

Autel Evo has an obstacle avoidance system that can help you avoid obstacles such as trees and buildings when flying close to them. However, if the drone is flying away from you, it will not sense obstacles coming from behind, so be careful and always keep an eye on what is going around you.

Overall, we are very impressed with the Autel Evo drone, it has some of the best navigation systems we have tested, and its camera quality is also very good. The only downside is that it has a shorter flight time than other drones like DJI Mavic Air.

5. Yuneec Typhoon H

Yuneec Typhoon H Pro with Intel RealSense...
  • The Typhoon H Pro with Intel RealSense Technology, winner of the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show

Specifications:

Navigation: GPS | Flight time: Up to 28 min | Flight range: 1 mile | Camera: 20 Megapixel | Weight: 1.5 kg | Top speed: 30 mph | Battery size: 4S 5250mAh LiPo

Pros
  • Weatherproof
  • Good flight time
CONS
  • The transmitter does not have a built-in screen
  • Limited flight rang

Our Review of Yuneec Typhoon H

Yuneec Typhoon H is a gem of a drone, and it is one of the most popular drones on Amazon. The drone features a very good GPS system and an obstacle avoidance system, which makes flying this drone very fun and easy. This drone might not be the most famous, but it is one of the favorites of professional drone pilots.

Best follow-me drones

This drone is tough and weatherproof; it can brave strong winds without problems which makes this one of the safest drones in its category. It also features a countermeasure system specifically designed for Typhoon H that will detect any nearby obstacles and then avoid them accordingly.

One of the biggest strengths of Typhoon H is its flight time; it comes with a 4S 5250mAh LiPo battery that gives it close to 30 minutes of flight time. This makes Typhoon H ideal for long-distance flights and will give you enough power to enjoy your experience.

Yuneec Typhoon H comes with a 1080p 60fps camera mounted on a 3-axis gimbal stabilizer. The video quality is very good but not as sharp as other drones in this price range.

If you are into aerial photography, then we recommend investing some extra money in the Yuneec Breeze, which offers better picture quality. However, Typhoon H does have one great feature that allows you to record 20 Megapixel spherical panoramic videos.

The transmitter of Typhoon H has a range of 1 mile, which is not as impressive as the DJI Phantom 4's range of 5 miles, but it is still more than enough for most users. The flight range of a mile might sound less to some people, but it is more than enough for most users.

The Typhoon H is one of the fastest drones in its category, with a top speed of 30 mph (48 km/h). It can fly very fast, and you will be able to catch some stunning videos thanks to the outstanding GPS system. However, we recommend flying slowly indoors and also when there are strong winds outside for your own safety.

However, there are a few downsides to this drone. First, the battery is not as big as the DJI Phantom 4's, and it will only give you around 28 minutes of flight time. Second, the transmitter does not have a built-in screen, so you will need to use your smartphone or tablet to see what the camera is seeing.

Overall, the Yuneec Typhoon H is a very good drone that offers great value for the money. It features some of the best safety features in its category, a sturdy build, and a very good camera. The only downside is that the battery life could be better, and the transmitter does not have a built-in screen.

Pros
  • Very easy to fly thanks to the Breeze Cam app
  • Stores images and videos internally
  • It has a high-end camera
CONS
  • It has a short battery life
  • Is fairly heavy

Our Review of Yuneec Breeze

Yuneec Breeze is another great drone with follow-me drone features that are ideal for both beginners and seasoned drone pilots. These are next-level selfie drones that not only take amazing pictures but also record them in full HD 4K video quality.

Best follow-me drones

Breeze drone is amazing when it comes to stabilization of images; it features a 1-axis gimbal stabilizer, and its predecessor Typhoon H has a 6-axis stabilization system. This makes the camera super stable, which allows for very clear photos and videos.

The only downside of this drone's camera is that it doesn't come with a mechanical shutter like other high-end drones, which means you will not be able to shoot any fast-moving objects.

The flight time is a bit shorter compared to other drones in the same category. Yuneec Breeze can stay in the air for around 12 minutes which might be a problem for some professional drone pilots, but it should be more than enough if you just want to take short aerial footage.

The good news is that this drone comes with two batteries, so you can fly it twice without having to recharge or replace them.

You get to enjoy the freedom of 100 meters when flying this drone. This allows you to capture some high-quality images and videos without worrying about losing control of your device mid-flight.

There are other drones on this list that offer much longer flight ranges, but we think that 100 meters of the range are more than enough for most users.

The camera of the Breeze drone captures high-quality photos and videos that you can enjoy after each flight. It features a 13 MP CMOS sensor which allows you to capture stunning pictures and videos in both direct sunlight and during the nighttime with very little noise or blurriness.

The best part about this drone's camera is the fact that it comes with a built-in gimbal, with a shutter speed of up to 1/8000 s.

This drone is a bit faster than the average drone in its category, with a maximum speed of 18 kmph. This means you can have a lot of fun while flying, but it also means you need to be extra careful when going near any obstacles because Breeze might not be able to react quickly enough.

We recommend keeping this drone away from children and pets that could get injured if they somehow manage to grab or knock over the device mid-flight.

Breeze drone comes with two batteries which allow for double the flight time. You can get 12 minutes of fly time when using both batteries at once, but if you use one battery and charge it during your break, you will be able to enjoy 24 minutes of uninterrupted flying.

This is a great feature since many drones on the market offer shorter flight times or require you to buy third-party batteries. Another great thing about this device is its internal storage of 16GB that allows you to store all your high-quality photos and videos without having to remove the SD card after every flight.

As for the flight modes, there isn't much you can do here except record videos and take photos from different angles. However, it does come with a very useful follow-me mode, which allows your device to follow your hand movements without you needing to control it directly all the time.

Yuneec Breeze drone has a weight of 300g, which is pretty heavy for a drone that size. The good news is that it only weighs as much as a bottle of coke, so you won't have any problems carrying it wherever you go.

Overall, Yuneec Breeze is a great drone that can offer you high-quality aerial shots without the complicated controls of more expensive drones. It comes with a relatively short flight time, and it is pretty heavy, but these are some features that more professional users should be able to look past.

Pros
  • High portability
  • Excellent camera specs
  • Simple controls
CONS
  • The standard version doesn't offer a very long flight time
  • No dedicated battery charger included

Our Review Of DJI Spark

DJI Spark is a well-known name in the world of drones. The company has built a reputation for high-quality devices that are packed with all the latest features and at affordable prices.

Best follow-me drones

The first thing you will notice about Spark is its unique foldable design which allows you to carry it around without any problems. The drone itself weighs only 300g, so it won't be a challenge to keep in your backpack when going on a road trip or a holiday.

DJI Spark is equipped with GPS, so it can return to the takeoff point on its own if the signal is lost or you lose control. The device also has forward vision sensors, which allow Spark to detect obstacles in front of it and stop before hitting anything.

The drone manufacturer claims that the drone's average flight time is 16 minutes which isn't very impressive compared to other drones at this price range (Yuneec Breeze – 25 minutes).

The problem lies within DJI's decision not to include a dedicated battery charger – you will have to plug your smartphone into a USB port using a special cable included in the box.

Spark's maximum distance from the ground is limited to 2km, which is a decent size without compromising Spark's portability.

Spark comes equipped with a 12 MP camera and allows you to record videos at 1080p (60 fps) or 720p (30 fps). The quality of the captured video footage will be decent enough for casual use. According to DJI, Spark can capture images with an exposure time as short as 1/16000 seconds and has a photo resolution of 4000 x 3000 pixels.

The manufacturer claims that the drone's average flight speed reaches 31 mph (50 kph), which is very fast considering its weight. Spark also features different preset flying speeds, so you can choose to fly at low or high altitudes.

Spark isn't equipped with a dedicated battery charger – it has to be plugged into your smartphone using a specific cable included in the package.

The standard version of Spark uses a 1480 mAh lithium polymer battery that takes around 100 minutes to recharge fully. If you need more power, DJI offers an upgrade that provides up to 16 minutes of flight time per charge.

Overall, DJI Spark is an excellent choice for everyone who wants to take their first steps in the drone industry. The manufacturer has built a well-rounded device for casual aerial photography, and it's available at a very attractive price point.

  • Follow me function
  • Excellent image stabilization
  • Can shoot both videos and photos
CONS
  • Not very lightweight or small compared to other drones with the same features.

Our Review Of DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0

Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 needs no special introduction. The device is one of the best-selling drones in its category, and it's been very popular among professional photographers for a number of years now.

Best follow-me drones

People who have purchased the original version of Phantom 4 Profound V2.0 are an excellent addition to their equipment list. The most impressive feature is definitely the upgraded camera that features a 1-inch CMOS image sensor with a 20MP resolution.

Thanks to improved sensors and a better processor, this model can capture video footage at 4096 x 2160 pixels or record stills at 13 fps which is perfect for any type of photography, from wildlife to portraiture/fashion shoots.

In order to provide the best possible flight performance, Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is equipped with a 5-direction obstacle sensing system that allows it to detect and avoid obstacles in front of its nose.

Thanks to advanced GPS and GLONASS navigation systems, the drone is able to return to its takeoff point when battery power becomes low.

As far as battery life goes, the manufacturer promises up to 30 minutes on a single charge – this number might be slightly exaggerated considering that P4P gets quite hot after 25 minutes of flight. The good news is that you don't need to wait for your device to cool down before recharging it.

The charging time is about 90 minutes, which is more than enough considering the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 can get back in action after an hour of charging.

According to official specs, DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 has a maximum range of 10 km. In real-life conditions, however, the actual reach depends on a number of factors, including interference from other devices and weather conditions.

As for battery power, this model is equipped with an improved 5870 mAh LiPo 4S smart battery which allows it to fly for up to 30 minutes. If you don't want your drone to run out of juice before it gets back, you should purchase some additional batteries.

As you can see in the picture below, DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is not exactly very lightweight or compact. Unfortunately, this is one of the drawbacks of devices in its category - they are more for professional applications than for fun flying.

Overall, DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is one of the best devices with follow-me function on the market for aerial photography at this moment - it's easy to fly, has an excellent image stabilization system that makes footage smooth and steady, can shoot in any lighting conditions and has a range of useful features that make flying more fun.

Our Review Of DJI Mavic 3

DJI Mavic 3 can be called the smallest, smartest, and most efficient drone in DJI's lineup. The device is easy to transport, which makes it suitable even for amateur pilots who want to have fun flying their drones.

Best follow-me drones

This drone is especially useful for those people who are traveling a lot as the aircraft fits inside a small bag with its propellers removed, so there isn't any problem if you want to take it with you on the plane.

DJI Mavic 3 comes with the Follow-me mode, which means that the drone will always follow you. This is very helpful when you want to film yourself or if you need help with setting up a shot and don't want to risk losing the flight path by making complicated maneuvers.

Since this model was developed after DJI acquired a company called "Movidius," they were able to add its depth-sensing cameras on the bottom, so now this device knows where it is in 3D space, what obstacles are nearby and how far away from the ground it is.

These cameras are helping the drone with obstacle avoidance which will let you fly this aircraft even in more complicated terrain than before.

This model also has Ultra-compact antennas fitted inside the top of the device, so now there is no disturbance caused by protruding ones because they create drag when in flight.

This means that in order to get the maximum performance out of it, you will be able to fly in heavily populated areas without worrying about losing signal or having any other connection issues during flight.

The battery of this drone has a capacity of 5000 mAh, which gives 45 minutes of flight time. This is an acceptable amount for this size, but if you want to take full advantage of the DJI Mavic 3's features, then you will have to get two batteries because one won't be enough if you are filming or photographing.

The maximum distance at which this device can communicate with its controller is 15 km, and with GPS, it is 10 km. This improved flight time and signal strength were achieved with the support from "Galileo" and "BeiDou" satellite systems as now there is no need for using both GPS and GLONASS together since it would drain the battery faster than with their assistance.

This drone is equipped with one of the best cameras that can be fitted to a drone of this size. The "4/3 CMOS" 20 MP camera is able to take videos in 4K resolution at 30 fps, and the images it captures are very detailed.

Since DJI Mavic 3 is made for aerial photography, not only does it have great photo capabilities, but its video transmission system is also more advanced than before. That is why even while you are flying high above the ground, this drone will send ultra-HD videos without any signal loss.

Overall, this drone is recommended for those people who are looking to have fun with a device that isn't too big or hard to transport since the Mavic 3 weighs only 895 grams without its propellers.

Professionals may find this device lacking some settings and features which they would expect from DJI, but regardless of that, DJI Mavic 3 is a great device with many useful functions which will make your life easier.

Conclusion

To summarize the article, it is safe to say that most of the best follow-me drones are listed above for you to choose from; if you are looking for a quadcopter to help film your adventures without having to touch the controls, then follow me drones are what you need.

These products have made it so much easier for people who love filming their outdoor pursuits or even just running around town on foot. The follow-me function is a blessing for people who fly the drones alone, as that also means that it can be used by newbies who haven't got a clue about using the controller.

Now it's all up to you to choose from the best; I hope this article helped you in your search for the best follow-me drones.
